'Chinese Take Me Out' Dress

Description

This is the dress I made for my draping class that was for the Fantasy Garment project. My class had to make a garment without using any type of fabric...even lace and trims weren't allowed. I had tons of ideas of what to do in the beginning, but after researching getting the materials I realised how expensive it would have added up to. So about an hour before class I had no supplies and I went to a party store with my boyfriend to try to find something to use. I had in mind using napkins on a dress and fringing them so they would be flowy and bouncy and kind of look like a 1920s flapper dress. I picked up a red plastic tablecloth and was gonna buy a whole bunch of same colored napkins when I saw these pretty asian napkins that were absolutely cute. My final result dress is pretty cute and nice...my whole class thought it was classy looking, and this one awesome hippie guy said it was hot and when I said I was gonna call it Chinese Take Out, he suggested chinese take me out, and another girl was like "I'd totally wear that on a date!" Haha. My college had a fashion show last week that they have every year (my first one =)) and my dress was worn by a super tall, skinny, pretty latino girl named Jessica. I gave her a red take out box that she carried down the runway to look like a purse. I have a video of her going down the stage but I dont' know how to get it on here. Hehe. Oh yes and the dress is made out of red plastic tablecloth of course, asian napkins, duct tape, and there is closure in the back of velcro and snaps. I really like how the train turned out. It was originally just red and it seemed plain so I glued the napkins inside of it and then cut strips of red duct tape and made a symetrical design with it over the napkins. It looks pretty cool when it's draped right....sadly when the model wore it the train wasn't showing very much...ah well. But all in all this was a pretty fun dress to make (and challenging since it wasn't fabric) and I like how it turned out. :boogie:

That is so cute ^^. At first I thought it might be a uniform for a chinese resturant but then I read the description. I'd love to see it on a model. So cool!
